Henry Pleasants Hero of Petersburg Mine Explosion

General Henry Pleasants born February 17, 1833 in Buenos Aires. Civil War soldier and engineer led 48th Pennsylvania miners in Petersburg explosion project. Fought at Bull Run Chantilly South Mountain Antietam and Fredericksburg. promoted after heroic actions.

Pleasants Mine Explosion at Petersburg Makes History

The account details Colonel Pleasants leading a daring underground mine at Petersburg to break a strong Confederate redoubt. Despite doubt from officers including General Meade, Pleasants persevered, fuses relit by volunteers, and the eruption created a 200 by 50 by 30 foot crater. Meade congratulated him. Pleasants rose to Colonel, later brevetted Brigadier General, and died in 1880 after a career with the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company.

Proposed Act To Correct Bad Housing In Harrisburg

A Feb 17 Harrisburg report describes a Senate bill by Senator Miller Crawford to regulate tenements and boarding houses. The measure would empower local health boards to curb overcrowding poor ventilation and filth and require water and sewage installations in multi family homes. Backers from the Pennsylvania Housing and Town Planning Association and the State Health Department argue it will curb disease crime and minerality linked to abnormal housing conditions.

Local Family Hosts Guests and Attends Presbyterian Play

Sheloc ta Mr and Mrs Ralph Brindle and children Florence and Edward of Youngstown were guests of Mrs Theinale's parents Mr and Mrs David Tetfelinger Saturday evening and Sabbath. A play titled The Little Clad hopper was presented at the United Presbyterian Church last Friday evening. Mason McChaughey returned from a week with relatives in Sykesville. Mr and Mrs Duff Edwards visited in Indiana Tuesday. Ernest Purnhull visited his grandparents. Mr and Mrs Frank Patrick spent several days with the former's parents in Mahaffey. Mr and Mrs Wimner Kilne and daughter Frances were guests of Mr and Mrs G C Robertson of Aultman over Sabbath.
