President Anastasio Somoza vowed that guerrilla attacks and a nationwide general strike would not stop Sunday's municipal elections. He urged Nicaraguans to vote freely, amid clashes that left 14 dead and 24 wounded, as Sandinistas fight to oust his regime.
About 50 peasants linked to the Marxist Popular Revolutionary Bloc liberated from the United Nations building in San Salvador after occupying it to press for 150 political prisoners’ release. They demanded U N intervention for relatives jailed during a Izalco sugar mill strike.
At the Mental Health Association meeting on February 2 Dr. G J McLaughlin a Indiana dentist and Pitt Medical School lecturer discussed cranial mandibular misfunction and its link to head pain. He cited pioneers Gell and Torre and noted treatment success around 92 percent with diet and exercise as factors. Volunteers for the Association for the Blind were urged with an orientation March 2 and MILA regional conferences and fundraisers announced for 1977.
Senator Pat Stapleton of Indiana applauded Gov. Shapp's withdrawal of Samuel H. Begler's nomination to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. He said Begler could not secure 34 Senate votes and urged selecting a more qualified candidate for the 10 year post overseeing a $44 million budget.
A wood burning stove overheated and ignited a wall in Gary Silliman’s mobile home in Loyalhanna Township near the Loyalhanna Dam. Five fire companies from New Alexandria Crabtree Loyalhanna Salem Townships and Saltsburg fought the blaze at 12 30 p m with no injuries reported. Later Bell Township firefighters tackled renewed flare ups at the Bill James residence in Truxall 1 05 p m amid debris from an earlier destruction.
Pittsburgh Mayor Richard Caliguiri demands 83 additional garbage handlers to clear four weeks of accumulated refuse in hilly icy districts of the city. The sanitation department will mobilize crews to speed collection and reduce health risks as conditions worsen.
Washington reports that TV coverage of House floor debates is postponed for the year due to lighting and mic problems. Radio will cover the Panama Canal treaty debate in the Senate while TV remains off air, with PBS providing initial canal debate coverage.
Nanty Glo area men faced fines and charges before District Justice Piurkowsky. Randy Nyland and Paul Cochran waived preliminary hearing on burglary theft and possession of tools from Dino's Lumber case and posted 4000 bond each. Larry Swartz fined 100 plus 26 costs for harassment. William Shirk Jr. taxed 200 for eluding police and driving without rights plus 45 speeding and 30 costs. Patrick Stanton to pay 442 for DUI driving while suspended and resisting arrest.
Chicago's only afternoon daily, the Chicago Daily News, faces closure on March 4 unless losses are cut. Publisher Marshall Field cited an $11 million loss last year and warned unions as talks begin. Time Inc and Allbritton agreed to a $20 million transfer of ownership with Board approval required.
Police probed five crashes yesterday across the district with one minor injury. Pungsutawney resident William R. Rietz 22 was injured when his car hit a utility pole on Graffius Avenue at 2 30 am. Mary Manecke and Donald Plater escaped injury in a two car crash on Ben Franklin Road South and Shelley Drive. Timothy Willis and Stephen Zaync collided on Route 286 and Rustic Lodge Road. E J Hempill and Janet B Anderson collided on S Sixth Street and Carter Avenue with moderate damage. Debbie Smith 8 of Commodore was not hurt when her car struck a guard post on Route 286 near Clymer.
Graceton Local 1619 of the United Mine Workers will hold a meeting at 10 am on Sunday February 6 at the Graceton Union Hall. The agenda includes discussion of loan applications for the Credit Union.
Gov Shapp voluntarily appeared before a federal grand jury probing state liquor warehouse contracts and possible extortion ties. He testified for about an hour, stressing he was assisting the Bellomini inquiry rather than targeted. Officials say the probe centers on payoffs and warehouse bids tied to Rep Bellomini of Erie. Separately Indiana police investigate car thefts at Indiana Area Senior High School, with items such as a CB radio and tape player reported stolen from three vehicles.
