Strikes Shut Down Tokyo University

Prolonged student strikes at Tokyo University forced the suspension of freshmen admissions for next year. Radical Zengakuren students demand greater autonomy and democratization, barricades and occupation of Yasuda Hall sparked protests, and President Kazuo Ouchi resigned last summer before Ichiro Kato led discussions amid police restraint. DuPont Sees Higher Earnings in 1968 Outlook

DuPont Co, the largest U S chemical maker, expects 1968 earnings to rise about 20 percent from 1967, with earnings around 968 million. Last year the firm earned 314 million dollars or 8.58 a share, while sales may reach a record 12 percent above 1967 revenues of 3.079 billion. President C B McCoy cited stronger civilian economy and Europe as drivers, noting gains in textiles, autos, and lumber demand and an expected 330 million in construction spending in 1968 with a possible rise in 1969.

ITT Forms Aerospace Optical Unit

ITT announced formation of an aerospace optical division to handle defense space projects. The unit, led by vice president Jack H. Volbrecht, will house research, development and manufacturing in California Indiana Pennsylvania and Virginia with headquarters in San Fernando California.

Archbishop Cooke Visits Chiang Kai-Shek in Taipei

Roman Catholic Archbishop Terence J. Cooke of New York, military vicar of the U.S. armed forces, met President Chiang Kai-Shek in Taipei Formosa during a 21 hour Christmas visit to U.S. forces in the Far East. He arrived Sunday from Manila and left for Seoul this afternoon, continuing a tour that includes Seoul after the brief stay.

Rio shantytown quarry slide kills dozens in Brazil

In Rio de Janeiro a 300 foot quarry collapse at Favela Hill crushed a shantytown housing about 26 shacks causing deaths and injuries. Firefighters recovered eight bodies by Sunday night and a 3 year old boy survived before dying later. Authorities evacuated 300 residents as rain loosened rocks and dynamite blasts worsened the slide.

U S and Viet Cong Agree to Meeting On Prisoners

Saigon AP reports the U S Command will send five representatives to a New Year meeting 50 miles northwest of Saigon to discuss three American POWs promised freedom by the Viet Cong. A no-fire corridor will shield the site from 6 am to six hours after the talks.
