Philadelphia December 28 Martin W Clement president of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company has been named an adviser to the Army in its operation of the nations railroads Secretary of War Stimson announced Clement 62 took the first train to Washington He was born in Sunbury the son of the late General Charles M Clement former commander of the Pennsylvania National Guard He graduated from Trinity College and joined the railroad rising to president in 1935 He is a director of numerous affiliated companies and banks His daughter Alice W Clement enlisted in the Waves and will attend officer candidate school telling her father to have starin on his spine and pursue his work to its finish.
Washington dispatch reports Harry Hopkins denying involvement in a forged letter about Wendell Willkie. Hopkins asked the FBI to investigate and called the letter and signature forgeries. C Nelson Sparks, former Akron mayor, claimed Willkie’s 1940 nomination irregularities and supported Hopkins’ renomination movement. Senator Langley urged a Senate inquiry into Sparks charges.
Air express cargo handled in coordinated rail way express service for the nation s commercial air lines rose 16 8 percent in October versus a year earlier. W M St Clair, agent of Railway Express Agency, reported 36 581 shipments moved in the combined service, up from 31 292 in October 1942. Express charges were 25 percent higher than a year ago and more than 43 tons of air express are handled daily. A large share is war material shipments with about 40 percent under air transportation priority.
