Afro-Asian Countries Get Red Aid Promise

Cairo dispatch reports the Soviet Union offered broad economic aid to participants at the Afro-Asian conference. The program would provide loans or aid without strings, with economists available for exchange, and no demand to join blocs or alter governments. Egypt suggested further developments in separate proceedings.

Sunday sales arrests hit Harrison Twp and Butler County

Pittsburg reports Harrison Township and Butler County fines under a 1794 Sunday sales law. Twelve area residents were fined four dollars each with eleven dollars and fifty cents in costs after hearings led by Justice of the Peace Francis D. Sharp. Sixteen Harris residents faced charges for alleged Sunday sales on December 16. Ten of the fined appeals go to Allegheny County Court. most others were ordered to appear or turned over to probation. Authorities noted restaurants drug stores gasoline stations and a general store were among those involved.

1958 Modernization Set for McCreary Tire Plant

The McCreary Tire and Rubber Company announced a 1958 modernization program funded by 400000 in new financing from The Savings & Trust Company of Indiana and The Berks County Trust Company of Reading. Funds will retire debt, buy cost reducing machinery, and bolster working capital. no major building program is planned. The firm, founded in 1915 by WG Harry McCreary, now employs over 300 with a 1957 sales forecast above 7.5 million dollars amid a tough year ahead.

Life imprisonment for L Ewing Scott in murder case

Los Angeles AP. L Ewing Scott was sentenced to life in prison rather than the death penalty for the murder of his wife Evelyn Scott, 63, who vanished from their Bel Air home 2 1/2 years ago. The verdict was delivered by the same jury that found him guilty last Saturday.

Erie Father Dies in Two Car Crash

Anthony Bogdanowicz, 34, a father of three from Erie, was killed yesterday in a two car collision at an Erie intersection. He was thrown from a car driven by James Dinges, 30. Occupants of the other vehicle, Lenore Ruggiero, 45, and her daughters Barbara 5 and Nancy 8, were listed in good condition at hospitals.

Missile program spending nears seventeen billion dollars

United States spending on missile research development and production surpasses 17 billion dollars since World War II. About half the total has funded postwar programs since 1950, with Congress probing the Pentagon’s handling of funds and future appropriations. The Pentagon lists 17 78 100 000 signed to missile programs through May 1948 and earlier, excluding an anticipated extra billion dollars sought by Defense Secretary McElroy.

Blairsville's James M Torrance, 79, longtime business manager at Peoples Natural Gas, dies. He served 42 years with Coneymaugh Gas, retired in 1940, elder and clerk in United Presbyterian Church, charter Blairsville Rotary member, ex Kiwanis and council member, and fire department veteran. Born November 4, 1878, in Scandale. survived by wife Car Lee.

Indiana Borough Accepts County Airport Offer

Indiana Borough Council approved accepting the county commissioners bid for Jimmy Stewart Airport. The sealed county bid was the only offer, at one dollar, with seven of eight council members voting yes. Transfer of title to the county is expected within days under terms protecting the borough’s stake if the airport is ever sold.

Rural Valley bank robber arrested in debt‑ridden salesman case

Federal and local officers captured Parker County salesman Robert C. Rose after a noon Monday hold up at Rural Valley's Peoples National Bank. Rose, debt troubled and in need to cover bad checks, reportedly confessed and will be charged under the Federal Bank Robbery Statute.
