UN negotiators propose sick prisoner exchange at Panmunjom
MUNSAN Korea December 22 AP United Nations negotiators urged an immediate exchange of sick and wounded war prisoners. The UN said 37 600 South Koreans held in prison would be released and the Communists would consider the proposal though a UN spokesman warned it had less than a 50 50 chance of success. The release of 37 500 South Korean civilians from Allied prisons followed Red Cross discrepancies in prisoner lists. Rear Adm Libby cited a lag in Geneva information for the gap between UN and Red lists. The Allies told the Red Cross that 37 500 names should be removed. No explanation for the list difference was given. Staff officers halted armistice supervision talks after a brief session Saturday. They left the matter unresolved.
