Tough Screening Planned for State Police Post

Gov William Scranton will screen applicants for state police commissioner through a three member committee and his staff. A 390 word statement of qualifications will be requested from all applicants, with interviews to follow for those deemed qualified. The panel will judge leadership, public command, expression, appearance, and neatness. About 90 people reportedly applied for the top job, open to outsiders and current officers from captain up.

Leftist Bosch Leads Dominican Presidential Vote Early

In unofficial returns from the first free Dominican election in 38 years, left-leaning Juan Bosch leads over conservative rival Viriato Fiallo in the president race. Bosch shows strong support in Santo Domingo and Santiago while Fiallo leads in Ciba Valley and Puerto Plata. final counts not yet available with results fluctuating. Bosch and Fiallo are viewed as US-friendly figures who opposed Trujillo, with Bosch facing late campaign charges later retracted.
