Shafer Veto Threatens Unemployment Benefit Bill

Harrisburg AP Shafer administration funds a bill to raise weekly unemployment benefits from 45 to 60 dollars and remove pension deductions for returning workers. Amid three liberalizing amendments from organized labor, Shafer warned he would veto any bill containing further amendments. House Democrats passed the amendments to the administration package before sending two measures to the Senate, including wage and workers’ compensation changes. The package also seeks to increase the state minimum wage to 1.60 by 1971 and extend widow benefits, with other provisions debated.

Cardinal Spellman Estate Willed to New York Archdiocese

NEW YORK AP Francis Cardinal Spellman left his entire estate, about 30 000 dollars, to his successor as Archbishop of New York for the benefit of the archdiocese. The will dated April 30 1960 was filed for probate in Manhattan Surrogate's Court. Spellman died December 2 at 78 from a stroke. The successor has not yet been named.
