Gortelyou Held Up Says His Bid Was Ignored

Justice Gould to require George B. Cortelyou to show cause why he should not be enjoined from delivering balance of Panama canal bonds worth 21 450 000 to banks and others whose bids were lower. George W. Austin of New York seeks action claiming only 1 000 000 of 25 000 000 in bonds were allotted to individuals and rest went to national banks with higher bids. The case centers on alleged malfeasance and violation of Circular No. 68 and statutes.

Hitchcock Denies Disloyalty to Roosevelt

Washington dispatch reports Frank Hitchcock assistant postmaster general breaking silence to refute Cortelyou’s charge of disloyalty to President Roosevelt. Hitchcock states the charge is false, notes the president knows it, and warns against misleading the public while declining further discussion.

Oklahoma Depositors Guarded by New Banking Law

Guthrie Oklahoma December 19 1907 a new state banking law creates a guaranty fund for deposits in insolvent banks to take effect February 17 1908 banks pay one percent of daily average deposits to the state banking board with future assessments as needed when a bank fails the examiner pays depositors from the fund creating a first lien on bank assets National banks may opt in by agreement among banking officials and the US Comptroller of the Currency

Robbery attempt and manhunt near Jamestown

Miss Maud McCrumb, twenty three, head of the local school, was attacked near Jamestown by Charles Summers, thirty three, a Turnersville farmer. Summers fled as William Carr and a posse chased him. Summers was captured and hurried toward Greenville amid threats of vigilante action.

Student at University of Pennsylvania Hangs Self in Dorm

A 22 year old mental student from Kansas City Missouri at the University of Pennsylvania died by suicide in his dorm room. He had attempted to end his life earlier by inhaling chloroform but was resuscitated. He left a note praising his sister and parents. He spoke of desiring not to spend another dreary day alone. His body was found hanging from a door hinge after a roommate discovered him with a curtain cord. He was reportedly well advanced in studies with no known trouble.

Car Jumps Switch Unconscious Motorman Falls on Controller

In Jounellsville Pennsylvania a rail car on the Uniontown to Greensburg line derailed at Main Street crossing, injuring several people including Mrs. Catharine Mickey and Miss Rose Dunston. Motorman Chas Lakin was knocked unconscious, his fall triggering the controller and power. The car demolished the front of Manny Rhodes department store. pedestrians and shoppers fled in panic. All injured are expected to recover.

Trains Slaughter Three in Cambria County Fatalities

Johnstown December reports three railroad fatalities in Cambria County. David A. Rhoades of Johnstown was killed by a Pittsburg accommodation train on the Pennsylvania railroad. Bennett Weakland, a coat operator from Patton, was run over near his hometown, his body cut in two. An unidentified man about forty was found mangled near Gallitzin. Trackwalker George Anits reports five dead and about a dozen injured in his territory.
