Campaign Against Dirty Air Bill Inched Toward Law

House and Senate conferees forged a bill to curb air pollution, threatening shutdowns for violators and jail terms. The measure, mainly drafted by Sen. Muskie, bars willful polluters and authorizes a $1 billion three year program, with strict national emission standards and a 1976 deadline for auto exhaust reductions. It also allows citizen suits and government inspections though negotiators warned environmentalists may contend it omits harsher steps. The conferees’ report now goes to both chambers.

Proposed Tower Plan at Gettysburg Sparks Opposition

Harrisburg AP The Historical and Museum Commission will lead a vocal fight to block a Washington DC man from building a 300 foot observation tower on private land near Cemetery Ridge at Gettysburg. The commission warns the needle like tower would harm the battlefield’s historical integrity and environment upcoming tourist season. Construction promoter Thomas R. Ottenstein says the tower would be educational and aimed at drawing visitors to the National Military Cemetery area.

Contends Hughes Holds Fate of Nevada Empire Manager

In Las Vegas AP report Robert Maheu says only Howard Hughes can dismiss him as manager of Hughes Nevada empire worth 900 million. He recalls Hughes Tool Co directors seeking his removal after Hughes reportedly left for a Bahamas vacation. A court hearing on a tool company bid to quash the takeover continued, with Maheu testifying.
