One Of Three Bandits Slain In Fateful Confrontation
In Chicago a soft drink parlor owner wrestled with four men who attempted a bandit raid. An unloaded shotgun was brandished by Jerry Novotny, but the assailants fled. Novotny then claimed the last bandit by the neck and during the scuffle Howard’s revolver discharged, killing him instantly. Separately, James Ward, a wealthy Chicago Heights bootlegger, was released by kidnappers after a $50,000 ransom was paid by his family. Ward had been held since the previous Saturday night near his home.
