Former Ind Couple Celebrate 50th 51st Anniversary in Pittsburgh

Two former Indiana residents, Mr. and Mrs. George E. Mitchell of 294 Watson Blvd North Side Pittsburgh, will celebrate their 50th and 51st anniversaries Friday night. Born in Indiana, they met at a Lutheran Church picnic near Ligonier. he is a foreman at R. T. Lewis Printing Co. in Pittsburgh, she is the former Pearl Marshall. The celebration includes their two daughters, two grandsons, and a great granddaughter in the Pittsburgh area.

No Compensation For Vacationers

Pennsylvania's unemployment compensation board ruled that employees at L'Agglon Apparel in Sunbury who took a July vacation are not eligible for benefits. The board said vacation time is voluntary and not good cause for unemployment, noting the law targets those unemployed through no fault of their own. In a separate tip, readers are advised to clean tiled hearths with turpentine and a dry cloth, warning against soap and water.

Dutch Ship Sails, Prepared To Engage Chinese Pirates

Hong Kong dispatch reports the Dutch passenger ship Van Heutz raided by Chinese pirates who kidnapped six passengers. The vessel, with 1,600 passengers aboard a 4,522 ton ship, sailed again for Swatow guarded by seven armed men to deter further attacks.

Rome reports Premier Alcide De Gasperi moved to set a date for new National Elections likely in April. The cabinet reshuffle added Labor Socialist and Republican ministers to back a united government aimed at securing an assembly majority against communist leftists.

Sanity Commission Named In Woman Slayer Case York

In York on December 16 a commission was appointed to assess the sanity of Mrs. Marion J. Heyneman 28 mother of two charged with murdering her husband William P. Heyneman 38 a World War II veteran. The petition was filed by District Attorney Rudisill for jail warden Sweeney who says hospitalization for mental disease is necessary. Heyneman killed with a rifle on December 3 at their Bald Hills home and was later hospitalized in Harrisburg for amnesia fears. Commission members include Doctors Perry and Heim of Harrisburg and attorney Van Baman of York. Also notes that petroleum products were first exported from the United States in 1861.

Pleads Innocent To Treason Charge

Tomoya Kawakita a 25 year old Japanese American pleaded innocent to treason charges after a federal judge denied moving the case to Japan. He was foreman at a Japanese prison camp in Honshu during World War II and faces 15 counts of cruelty to American POWs. Trial may begin Jan 27. Kawakita traveled to Japan in 1939 and returned in 1946, arrested June 5 after a former POW identified him in a California store.

Norristown Strike Ends at Times-Herald

Norristown Pa December 16 Allied Strikes ended as 43 AFL Local 620 typesetters returned to work on open shop terms after rejecting a closed shop. Management cited wage talks and retention plans while the union offered no comment. The dispute began December 8 over a wage demand from 60 to 72.50, with the paper offering 87.50 and the union accepting 67.50.

One Million Seek Homes In Japan After War Surrender

Tokyo reports a third winter after surrender as Kyodo News finds 1.6 million people desperate for housing. 19,000 families live in shacks and over 2,000 in air raid shelters in Tokyo. Firebombs destroyed 769,000 homes and 207,000 were torn down for firebreaks. Families share cramped dwellings as rebuilding costs soar.
