Ciano Explains Italian Stand In European War

Italian Foreign Minister Galeazzo Ciano declared Italy would stay out of the European war by agreement with Germany while preserving its own interests. President of Panama Dies at 59

Panama City Dec 16 Dr Juan Demostenes Arosemena president of Panama died of heart disease at Penonome after a recent illness. He had resumed duties on Dec 4 and suffered a fatal attack an hour after midnight. He was elected in 1936 and will be succeeded by Vice President Augusta Boyd. The death ends a period of active leadership during a time of regional neutrality talks.

Graf Spee Battles Through Fuel and Damage Updates

The Graf Spee showed wounded by prior hits and incomplete refueling with Langsdorff citing fuel shortages as a handicap in Wednesday’s engagement. Naval officials said the ship could sail from the harbor yet remained at anchor. The ship’s damage center stage was the ruined two scouting planes and a shell hit to the central tower. Broun Rallying After Pneumonia Attack at Hospital

New York December 16 Columnist Heywood Broun, 41, president of the American Newspaper Guild, was hospitalized with pneumonia after a lingering cold. He later suffered a heart attack induced by illness, but by midnight showed improvement. early today doctors reported him very sick though improving.

Man Held in Deaths of Five in Pasadena

Pasadena, Calif. Dee ig- Laurel H Crawford, 4, remained jailed in Los Angeles on suspicion of murder as funeral services were held for his wife and three children. The body of a fifth victim, Ralph Barnett, 61, a cousin of former Judge James Barnett, was to be sent to Harrisburg, Pa. A coroner jury could not decide if the five died in the car plunge down a mountainside last Monday but recommended continued investigation.

Obituary Dora Viola Scullough of Burnside dies at Pittsburgh

Dora Viola Scullough died December 19 after a brief illness at her home in Pittsburgh where she had lived 27 years. WPA Laborer Charged With Murder In New Milford

A 59 year old WPA laborer, Jacob Foss of Lithrap Townships Susquehanna County, admitted killing his wife Nellie Foss and burying her body on their farm after a quarrel fueled by alcohol. Foss led investigators to a shallow grave about 200 yards from their eight year old home off the Lackawanna Trail near Binghamton, New York. The murder charge will be presented to the Susquehanna County grand jury in January. The wife died after a fall in a New York hospital, according to Foss, but police found she had not been a patient there.

Speer Earns 60 Year Medal For Rail Service

William A. Speer, a Conemaugh Division conductor, received a gold service button from G. W. Sixsmith as he marks 60 years with the Pennsylvania Railroad. Born near Indiana, Pa, on January 23, 1871, he began as a rampman at 19 and rose through signal repair, yard clerk, and passenger brakeman to conductor by 1907. He now runs a local between Apollo and Pittsburgh, lives in Indiana, is married, and enjoys gardening and auto touring in his spare time.
