Fire destroys four apartments in Pittsburgh area blaze

A massive fire on Federal Street in Northside, Pittsburgh, leaves one resident believed dead and several injured or near death. The blaze caused an estimated 300000 in damage, with tenants rescued by ladders as flames compromised the building. Firemen found an elderly grocer, Joseph, bedridden for years, unable to move and dying from the heat as icy water drenched him.

Prince Kropotkin, famed Russian revolutionary, escaped from a fortress prison in St Petersburg after two years. While in a jail hospital he coordinated signals from a line of apses to alert allies, fled during a violin cue from a kiosk opposite the gate, dodged bayonets and a pursuing guard, and eluded capture in a carriage with a racing horse.
