New Lens Promises Near Blind Sight for Some

Dr. William Feinbloom of Columbia University announced a new clear-image lens capable of giving vision to about half of the 150,000 partially blind Americans. Worn like glasses, the lens comprises two or three elements spaced about one eighth inch apart and about seven sixteenths of an inch thick. He told the Maine Optometric Association the device removes all optical blur possible for a partially blind person.

Probe Crash That Killed 37 People

Cuban government and Cubana Airlines officials opened an investigation into a DC4 airliner crash off Bermuda that killed 37, with 17 bodies recovered and 20 listed as missing. Survivors from Spain, Cuba, and Mexico were reported progressing well at King Edward VII Hospital. The aircraft had departed Madrid for home.

Murder Suspect Dies of Wounds in Georgia Standoff

A 50 year old suspect, Carl Penfer, died from shotgun wounds after a police shootout near the Georgia Tech campus following a fatal clash in which Patrolman W M Richards was killed. Homer Marvin Spruell, held on suspicion of murder, had been under guard at Grady Hospital since the Tuesday gun battle. The exchange involved four chest hits and two shots to the head.

Oregon Senator Wayne L Morse told 175 Stevenson volunteers that independent voters will gain control of Congress within ten years. He said liberals have not controlled Congress since 1937 and predicted a realignment of political forces. Morse, elected as a Republican in 1950, backed Adlai Stevenson and self described as an independent after Eisenhower’s election.
