Both men were suspected of customs violations and failed to stop when ordered by agents.

New York December 6. After early irregular trading, utility stocks led a broad market gain as profit taking eased. Gas Light, American and foreign power, American Waterworks, Columbia Gas, Consolidated Gas, and North American rose 1 to 3 points. United Corporation moved above 37 for the first time since the crash, while copper issues like Anaconda gained 3 1/2 points to 80.
The veteran police printer representative W W Gries t died at the Park Hotel after an illness of six months. He came to Michigan for treatment of arthritis and pneumonia developed. A son George arrived to arrange burial in Lancaster Pennsylvania. The Park Hotel staff remained to care for him as he grew too ill to move.
Police probed the gun riddled body of Phil Diana also known as Sylvester Gratusso found dumped in a Brooklyn street gutter. Diana, linked to gang figures Frankie Yale Frankie Marlowe and Al Capone, reportedly boasted of knowing who killed Marlowe and would exact his own vengeance. He exited a night club with three men who hailed a ride and likely met a staged abduction.
George Merchant Alter aged 55 a Reynoldsville druggist and former Blairsville resident died at 1230 a m today at his home. He leaves his widow Anna Waugaman Alter a son George Alter and a daughter Vornell Alter. He is survived by three brothers Oscar Alter C A Alter and I M Alter and two sisters Mrs Ida Bossart and Mrs Edward Meir. Funeral services will be 230 pm Sunday at the Alter home in Reynoldsville with interment Monday in Blairsville Cemetery.
The December Grand Jury completed its session at noon yesterday after opening at 1:30 Monday. Forty seven cases were acted on with five true bills, two no true bills, and a total of eight bills found not true. Indictments included Mary Romancik and others for assault and felonious acts, John Pearce for murder and voluntary manslaughter, John Vancel for selling and possessing intoxicating liquor, and Howard Jones for aggravated assault and battery. The jury inspected county buildings and will publish recommendations tomorrow. Also noted was a road program discussion with Hon Charles R. Griffith for 1980 Indiana County. Found a note about a spaghetti spot, Cafe Homer City, D L Trunzo prop.
The Railway Express Agency prepared over a million holiday package address labels for express shippers to encourage early shipping and proper packing. W M St Clair says holiday traffic reflects general business up to the year’s average. He advises legible addressing, full street and receiver numbers, and clear state abbreviations to avoid misrouting amid growing towns. A stock of labels arrived at the local express office for distribution.
