U S and British scientists say Sputnik Is rocket likely plunged to its death Saturday night after putting Sputnik I into orbit October 4. The exact fall site remains unknown amid scattered sighting reports while Sputnik II continues to circle Earth. American scientists prepare to launch the first satellite this week possibly Wednesday.
U N Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold pressed Jordanian leaders in Amman as tensions rose over the Mt Scopus convoy issue. Talks aimed to prevent clashes as Israel planned a military convoy into Israeli held Mt Scopus, with officials warning of possible shooting if Jordan blocks convoys. Hammarskjold met King Hussein and Foreign Minister Samir Rifai while seeking a resolution to strengthen the U N Truce Supervision Organization’s role in the demilitarized area.
Tokyo reports say Haru Sueyama and her soldier husband may sail from Yokohama Friday if no appeal is filed in his manslaughter case. Maebashi court handed a three year suspended sentence. prosecutors consider appealing to a higher court and a decision is due tomorrow. An Army spokesman declined to confirm the departure plans.
General Electric VP Roy W. Johnson outlined five steps for cities to attract new industry at a speech to the American Municipal Association. He urged comprehensive planning with long term capital budgets, a business friendly climate among officials, strong education standards, industrial neighbors who support city needs without bargaining, and aggressive mayoral leadership.

The mission, set for Wednesday morning, expects a near equatorial path passing over parts of the United States south of a line from Cape Hatteras to near Los Angeles.
State Police report seven people injured in seven weekend automobile accidents in the County. Serious injuries include Gilbert Lce Lindaman, 31, Everson, with a fractured jaw and injuries to the wrist, clavicle, and head, listed in serious condition at Indiana Hospital. Lindeman and John Ludwig, 34, Dawson, were in a one car crash four miles north of Indiana on Route 86 yesterday at 5 45 p m. Ludwig, the driver, was admitted with a fractured shoulder in fair condition after his car ran off the highway, hit a snow fence and overturned. Damages to the car were about 350 dollars. Another two injuries occurred yesterday afternoon when a car pulled from Dean’s Diner parking lot on Route 22 near Blairsville and was struck by another car on Route 132. The driver failing to yield was John William Bell, 64, Tarentum. The other driver was Thomas Rea Bauers, 30, McKeesport. Injured were Edna Bell, 55, Tarentum, with contusions and abrasions, and Olean Scott, 59, New Kensington, with abrasions. See 7 Injured-Page 2, Col 4.
Indiana County records its first hunting death when 72 year old John Szenyo was found dead from a heart attack while deer hunting near Indiana. He was fatally stricken about 300 feet from Jinks Route 1422 and South Sixth Street Extension. The body was taken to Indiana Hospital at 9 30 a.m. by Fiore Naniccia who discovered him on the John Kensey farm. State Police and Dr Willis Hall coroner are investigating. South Funeral Home is handling arrangements. An obituary will be published tomorrow.
Edna May Reeger an eleven year old Homer City RD 2 girl is listed as satisfactory in the Indiana Hospital today following a mishap with an automobile at the intersection of Eighth and Philadelphia Streets in Indiana Saturday. Police reported the girl daughter of Mrs Leona Grumbling Homer City RD 2 was crossing Philadelphia Street at Eighth Street at 315 p m Saturday when she was struck while in the cross walk by a car driven by Theodore Banks Jr 23 621 Water Street Banks was progressing west on Philadelphia Street when the mishap took place.
Twenty eight Antarctic bound scientists were evacuated safely from the British polar research ship Shackleton after it rammed an iceberg one thousand miles south of Cape Horn. The Shackleton’s crew of 30 remained aboard as Protector reached the vessel and evacuated the scientists en route to South Georgia for repairs.
An explosion at Phoenix Iron and Steel in Harrisburg killed two workers and injured three others. Victims were William R. Radabaugh and Math shew G. Grubb. injured were Richard E. Barner Johnny V. McFadden and Arthur F. Miller. Coroner Thomas Fritchey cited a heater blast as the cause, with debris and roof damage reported across the 300 foot building. A company spokesman said an investigation will determine the blast cause, suspected from heater accumulation.
