Empty Oil Tanker Explodes With Casualties in Portland
PORTLAND Me August 31 At least three crew members were killed in an explosion aboard an empty oil tanker at Portland anchorage about 250 yards offshore. Coast Guard said the tanker had discharged its load last night and crew were cleaning the tanks when the blast occurred. The explosion sent up a red glare as fire boats rushed to the scene to battle the flames near two other tankers at anchor.

About 350 miners in Force Elk County walked out on July 16 over alleged intolerable sanitary conditions.
