Mangled bodies of airliner crash victims pulled from wreckage
A line of 100 men formed a rough chain on a rocky slope at the crash site near Winona Wisconsin to recover 26 mangled bodies, with 10 more taken out the previous night. The Northwest Airlines Marlin 2 0 2 bound from Chicago to Minneapolis with 36 aboard crashed during a severe storm into a wooded Mississippi River bluff. Authorities from the Civil Aeronautics Board and Administration inspected wreckage for structural defects. Coroner Herbert F. Stohr reported the ravine’s steep sides required a human chain to reach bodies still trapped. Two Given Sentences In Allegheny Court Morning
A 25 year old Glen Campbell mother of two was sentenced to eight months in the Allegheny County Workhouse and fined 100 dollars plus costs for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Grant Shirey of Sagamore got six months and 250 dollars for driving under the influence. Ten others entered guilty pleas with sentences deferred to Sept 20.

Bedford and Westmoreland counties tally weekend heat deaths. Martin Wigfield aged 64, a Bedford farmer, collapsed Saturday afternoon and was found in a field after an all-night search. D Harry Goneet, 64, of Jeannette, died after collapsing Saturday, with the Westmoreland coroner citing a heat induced heart attack.

Former Co Man Merle Van Horn Dies in Route 46 Crash
A former Smicksburg man Merle Van Horn 28 was killed and nine others injured in a three vehicle crash on Route 46 east of Apollo. Van Horn was dead on arrival at Allegheny Valley Hospital Tarentum after suffering a fractured skull and crushed chest. His family from Pitcairn had lived in Smicksburg before moving there. Edward Parler 39 of Avonmore drove the other car. Parler’s passenger wife Mariuth 28 and two children were treated after minor injuries. Blairsville resident William G. McBarney and his son were injured in a near head on crash west of Brenizere Route Philadelphia Aug 40 4. McBarney 42 and his son suffered elbow lacerations arm abrasions and knee and forehead contusions. Two other patients including a 19 year old girl and two children were admitted to Philadelphia hospitals as polio cases rose to 85 for the year. Mrs. Nancy Putt, 64, of Indiana R D 4, was admitted to Indiana Hospital with bruises and shock after a Route 422 collision four miles east of Indiana. She rode with Harry C Putt, 56, at fault, the other car driven by Kenneth D Montgomery of Pittsburgh.
