Lady Heath Back From Emergency Brain Surgery

The British flyer Lady Heath was rushed from Cleve land Emergency Clinic to Lakeside Institution for brain surgery designed to stop cerebrospinal fluid flow and prevent meningitis. Dr. Elliott C. Cutler and Dr. C. L. Harmon led the operation with two assistants. Several bone fragments pressing on the brain were removed. She remained unconscious at dawn, with recovery uncertain and days likely before the crisis passes.

San Juan Sinks After Fog Bound Collision Off California

The San Juan went down in three minutes after colliding with the tanker C T Dodd off Pigeon Point, California. Rescue efforts under dense fog saved 36 of 110 aboard, including 27 from the Dodd and seven from the Munami, as coast guard ships and nearby vessels searched the wreckage. Captain A F Asplund went down with the ship. Ralph Hillsman reported the rapid sinking and escape by life raft.

George Smith elected Grand Chef de Gare in Forty and Light

George A. Smith of Somerset was elected to succeed William S Yeager of Girard as Grand Chef de Gare of the Forty and Light Legion branch. Thomas Munroe was re elected grand commissaire intendant and other officers were chosen as delegates and grand cheminots for the national and district posts. Over 20,000 visiting Legionnaires are in Scranton for the convention with 25,000 to 30,000 ex service men in the parade tomorrow.
