About 100 wives of striking steelworkers met in McKeesport to press for a swift end to the steel strike. Steel chair Roger Blough to assume direct bargaining. The session, led by Mrs. James Hanratty, cited debt and depleted savings as reasons to conclude the dispute soon.
Ellwood City Pa AP assemblyman Donald Fox says revenue from existing state taxes will cover matching federal funds for all interstate and federal highway projects in Pennsylvania. He notes a gasoline tax rise would add costs and staffing, while Gov Lawrence pushes for a six cent tax increase to ensure full speed ahead on the state highway program.
Five Teamsters Union members file a federal suit seeking removal of monitors Chairman Martin F. O'Donoghue and Lawrence T. Smith from the court appointed board overseeing Teamsters Union actions. They allege conflicts of interest with O'Donoghue as AFL-CIO Plumbers Union attorney and Smith's ties to Schraffis and Howard Johnson restaurants in dealings with Local 816. The action accompanies a two year old New York Teamsters case that led to the monitor board's appointment.
PITTSBURGH AP Dist Aug Edward Boyle said Friday he will try to extradite Nicholas Kasanovich from California to stand trial on charges of slaying his wife 44 years ago Kasanovich now 77 was indicted in Pittsburgh in 1915 for the murder, he disappeared but recently was located in Fresno California
Indiana County Fair officials forecast a strong turnout for the 1959 event with livestock entries rising and a full carnival lineup. Activities span August 31 to September 5 featuring horse pulling, Rotroffs All Girl Thrill Show, a Carnival on Ice, children’s day pet show, Grand Cavalcade, stock car races, and eight wrestler match. The Penn Premier Shows headline midway entertainment alongside displays from industrial and service groups.
The Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Grade Crude Oil Assn. re elected J Paul Jones of Bradford president and executive manager. He will continue leading the association as its chief officer and strategist for the oil industry in the region.
Three people sustained injuries in separate incidents near Indiana. Firmin A Kitchen, 21, was treated at Indiana Hospital for knee injuries after a Route 80 crash north of the borough line. Jack Dodson, 22, escaped serious harm when his car was struck by a freight train during a violent rain storm at Marion Center around 7:30 pm. a passenger exited and tried to stop the train. Barbara Smith, 16, of 416 Philadelphia St, remained in Indiana Hospital with neck injuries after her car left Rt 80 and overturned north of Indiana, valued at about 400 dollars.
George Vichos, 27, of Detroit, told police after being picked up Friday night for investigation of taking money under false pretenses with an ingenious plan. Dressed conservatively, he stood by the bank night deposit chute with a blue Army ammo box and claimed the lock was jammed and deposits would be safe until morning. The furniture store manager deposited about 1,600 in cash and similar in checks, which Vichos dropped into the box before police arrived. He said he did not want to be a common thief.

Leo Dermota a 19 year old fur trapper from Westmoreland County was convicted of voluntary manslaughter for the slaying of Deputy Constable John Harenski in Herminie on November 21. A jury deliberated for several hours before the verdict was reached. Sentencing was postponed pending a possible motion for a new trial.
A notice of intent to sue has been filed against Mrs. Dick Haymes, wife of singer Dick Haymes. The claim alleges assault at a Wilkinsburg nightclub, with Margaretta Kelly stating she was scratched in the face after being called a has been.
