Altoona Man Found Near Road

Donald Smith, 25, of Altoona, was found lying along a road near Blairsville early this morning and admitted to Indiana Hospital at 4:15 a.m. County Detective James Washington investigates. officials believe a medical condition rather than an accident caused the incident. Indiana County hosts the Pennsylvania Highway Department District Engineer offices supervising five counties. About 1,300 employees work in Indiana, Armstrong, Butler, Clarion and Jefferson counties with annual payrolls near 5 million dollars for maintenance. The department handles 3500 miles of state highways and 1500 state bridges under five superintendents and 175 caretakers.

Air Guard Captured in Arizona Mock Attack Plan

Brig. Gen. Leonard E. Thomas and California Air National Guard officials simulated an attack on Seligman Field Arizona during a two week encampment. A New Mexico unit parachuted in 30 commandos and overran headquarters with machine guns and 46 caliber arms. The piece then notes Gen. The state faced a brutal heat wave with readings near or above 100 degrees in Philadelphia and Harrisburg. Philadelphia neared a 100-degree high, with a 101.2 degree record on Aug 26 and just 30 days in 76 years exceeding 100. Indiana Macaroni Company employees resume work this morning after a month long strike over wage demands. Local 58 head Leonard Rezzola Jr says negotiations were deadlocked. 29 workers returned and will accept the arbitration board’s ruling. Indiana Borough Secretary Walt Ansley says the current heat wave reduced parking meter receipts. Three days this week yielded the lowest totals of the year, totaling 170.16 dollars versus typical semi weekly collections of 240 to 250 dollars.

An Indiana State Teachers College student was cited after authorities said a Whizzer bicycle was operated without proper license. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon as police from Indiana Borough handled the matter.

Communists Try To Eject Berlin City Hall in Crises

In Berlin belligerent Communists forced entry into City Hall during a council meeting and demanded a Soviet zone dominated labor union committee replace the council. A spokesman denied any action committee purpose, while crowds outside swelled from 200 to over 2,000. Acting mayor Ferdinand Friedensbure accused Soviet backed police of aiding demonstrators.

Red Cell Found in Army Hotel in Seoul

The U S Army disclosed a Communist cell was uncovered at the 24th Corps headquarters in the Hanto Hotel locale. Twenty four Koreans were arrested and thirteen sentenced to jail. Most were dining room staff and leaflets backed the Russian backed North Korean government. No spying evidence reported. All 50 drapery fabrics reduced at local Curtain-Linen Shop.

Bond releases two men in armed robbery case

Ronald Fusilli and Carl Williamson of Pittsburgh were freed from Indiana County Jail on bond after being jailed for armed robbery of Paul Fleming in Indiana on August 18. Fusilli posted $3,000 cash bond, Williamson $5,000 property bond. two other alleged participants remain at large. Deed's Restaurant will close August 28 and reopen September 8. auditor's reports available at the Commissioners or Treasurer offices.

Seven Organizations Back Employ Handicapped Week in Indiana

Representatives from seven Indiana County groups met in Indiana Borough last night to promote National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week proclaimed by President Truman. The session reviewed 674 workers registered with the U S Employment Office of whom 37 are physically handicapped. breakdown shows 395 aged 18 40, 86 aged 31 40, 40 aged 41 50, 50 aged 51 60, and 97 over 61.
