Haileyville Oklahoma August 21 more than thirty miners suffocated as a barrel of oil ignited near the No 1 Haileyville coal mine fourteen miles east of McAlester. The fire destroyed hoisting and air shafts trapping workers below. Twenty six bodies removed after a three hour fight. six to eight more believed to be entombed. Twenty five mules suffocated. rescue teams fear extended search. Fire cut off surface communication and cages and cables burned.
