IRS commissioner Caplin testifies last year’s tax take was about 87 million, far short of prior $400 million estimate. Off track wagering on horse races reportedly totals around 50 billion yearly. a one percent tax would net about three billion annually, reducing government losses to two or three billion.

State Milk Bill Fails Second Time

Harrisburg AP says legislation to regulate farm milk sales was defeated in the House 105 to 99, just one vote shy of passage for the second time this session. Fire Leaves Thirteen Homeless Near Elderton

Elderton fire gutted a frame house two miles west of Elderton off Route 422 destroying the residence of Mr and Mrs Frank Faber. Loss was about 4000 with contents valued at 3000 no insurance. Fire started when some younger children played with matches in a closet while the Fabers were away shopping. The family, eleven children plus the Fabers, were staying with relatives after the blaze.

Hollidaysburg Crash Kills Three People

A Route 22 collision near Hollidaysburg Pennsylvania killed Gottfried Abram and Lena Abram of Larchmont New York and Cornel Perkins of Boston. Joseph J Moore of Boston died later at Mercy Hospital Altornit in critical condition. The other driver was identified as Abram. Police said a trailer truck was being passed when the head-on crash occurred destroying both vehicles.
