Patchen Beats Rayko in Akron Derby for Second Place

Gary Patchen of Fort Lauderdale narrowly missed defeating Dick Dawson to win the All-American Soap Box Derby title at Derby Downs Akron Ohio. Indiana Pa contender Gene Rayko was eliminated in his first heat drawing grassroots excitement from local fans. Dawson drove the winning gravity powered racer ahead of Patchen and Edward R Wotring Jr in a race watched by about 65000 spectators.

Boy Attacked by Shark Near Bolinas Beach

Three Perish In Meadville Fair AF Exhibit Blast

At Crawford County Fairgrounds Meadville Pennsylvania three Air Force crewmen died and a fourth injured when a fighter plane being assembled for exhibit contacted a high voltage line causing an explosion and fire. Police said five crew members were present. the fifth escaped injury. The victims were from the Air Force Orientation Group at Wright Patterson AFB Dayton Ohio. Names withheld pending family notification.

West Bonds Stronger Says LBJ On Return

Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson reports that free world bonds have grown stronger after his 36 hour visit to West Berlin. He spoke at Andrews Air Force Base on return from Europe and praised free German leadership and enduring ties with West Germany and West Berlin.

Lucerne mine death leaves questions on cause

Henry J. Ruffner 36 of Lucerne was killed in a Rochester and Pitts Burgh Coal Co. operation wreck inside the Lucerne mine. Officials said details were unavailable as federal and state mine investigators began inquiries. He left a wife and three children. This was the first fatality at the Lucerne mine since 1954. Further details and obituary forthcoming tomorrow.

Three Salisburg Men Sentenced in West Lebanon Theft

Three Salisburg area men pleaded guilty and were sentenced by Judge Edwin M. Clark in Indiana County Court for a residence theft in West Lebanon. Sherwood Renwick, 20, received six months to four years in the Allegheny County Workhouse plus restitution of 1195. Ralph Kelly, 25, and Gwen Boyd Kelly, 21, both tied to burglary and larceny, received suspended terms with probation and restitution totaling 120 and 225 respectively. All were part of a series of thefts from William Crawford’s residence.

Fire cuts Elderton phone lines in morning blaze

A fire in an unattended exchange of the Kittanning Telephone Company damaged cables and left about 700 Elderton subscribers without service. Emergency measures restored 100 lines, six of 1% rank lines work, and pay telephones were installed for emergencies. Officials expect full restoration by week’s end.
