In Ephrata Washington brothers Luther Gray and Homer J Gray met for the first time in six years during a reunion. A vigorous handclap as they greeted each other caused Luther Gray to fracture his arm in the incident reported locally.
London reports Britons face possible deeper shortages in food and vital imports as the government suspends the convertibility of pounds sterling into dollars. Chancellor Hugh Dalton announces the move, aiming to conserve dwindling U.S. loan funds amid Washington renegotiations. Sterling can still be exchanged for other currencies, but trade will be disrupted and rationing may tighten.
The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board reports Indiana County four stores sold 31995.14 from July 1 to July 15. Armstrong County seven stores sold 43878.37 Cambria County seventeen stores sold 140030.87 Westmoreland County sixteen stores sold 199220.20 in the same period.
A banquet will be held Friday at 6 30 pm at Rustic Lodge for Lee H Fleming of the People's Natural Gas Company. Fleming, local manager, retires this year with about 115 expected attendees. Also noted, an army worm crossed an 80 acre field in 24 hours.
Pittsburgh officials reported thieves removed a locked safe from the Allegheny County building. If the thieves open the strongbox they may find more than $2,000 in cash. The break in also caused the loss of about 40 automobile titles yesterday.
The United States signals readiness to abandon current Korea and Austria negotiations with Russia. Marshall set a Seoul deadline for a Soviet response on Korea while Vienna officials head to Washington. If talks fail, the U.N. route or Big Four panels may be used. Austria’s fate could go to the London November session.
A two car collision occurred yesterday at 10 15 AM at Seventh and Philadelphia Streets. Clara R Moore of Homer City drove a northbound car that stopped for a light and was struck by a northbound semi truck driven by James K Murray. Police report the bumper collision caused the impact.
Asuncion reports 1,600 rebels seized and remaining forces surrounded along the Paraguay River 40 miles south of the capital. Transport restored. arms from Uruguay alleged. protests over arrests in Korea and a Russian-occupied zone case raise regional tensions.
At INDIANTOWN GAP PA Aug 21 Pennsylvania s 6000 National Guardsmen abandon quarters for a seven mile overnight hike. They march three hours after supper, bivouac with shelter halves, run compass courses, and practice noise light discipline. Brig Gen Strickler will inspect bivouac setups before dawn return for Friday breakfast. Earlier infantry regiments completed two days of squad level combat operations.
DETROIT August 21 General Motors plans to close plants and curtail schedules in late August or early September due to a steel shortage. Walter P. Reuther, UAW president, urged President Truman to investigate steel production and capacity, charging steel monopolies with restricting the American economy.
An unauthorized strike of about 50 scarfers at the Hazelwood plant of Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp cut into coke and iron production. About 800 workers idle as defect cleaners protested a layoff of 15 under a union management plan. Return to work orders issued by CIO United Steelworkers Union officials.
Santa Monica Calif Aug 21 The Flying White Horse a four engine special DC plane returned to the Douglas Aircraft Co plant yesterday for a final checkup before taking President Truman to the Rio De Janeiro conference. Lt Col Henry T Myers the pilot said the plane ticked like a well oiled watch on its shakedown flights logging 100 hours 932000 miles and 28 countries Truman has yet to fly in the plane named the Independence.
President Truman summarized the government finances amid sharp fights over Congress slashing the 1848 budget by up to $6 billion. He credited Republicans with trimming initial estimates by 1.52 billion, but warned net savings may drop to 525 million or less due to unforeseen factors. Republican leaders denounced the claim as political optics while Senator Young and Rep. Taber pressed for tax relief to prevent inflation and production stagnation.
Senator Brewster announced Republicans will not seek a further life extension for the Senate War Investigating Committee beyond January 31. He said the panel will resume its inquiry into Howard Hughes wartime plane contracts on November 17, and that standing committees should take over investigations in the new session. Brewster indicated the group will not continue beyond the current term and a final report is prepared.

The Security Council rejected Hungarys bid for UN membership by a 1 to 1 vote with nine abstentions. Only Syria voted in favor. the United States cast the negative vote, failing to reach the required seven affirmative votes out of 11. In Salt Lake City a 22 year old mother Nor man Waagen and her 14 month old daughter were killed when a small table model radio apparently fell into a bath tub during a bath last night. Dr. Clarence R. Openshaw said the mother was electrocuted and the baby may have died from drowning and electrocution. Jerry Waagen, a three year old, alerted a neighbor with screams who called the fire department. responders could not revive them.
Two British soldiers were wounded when an electrically detonated mine blasted their truck near Natanya. In Jerusalem a shop owned by Arabs was demolished by a bomb tossed by an Arab boycott patrol. Haifa reports say 10,000 pounds was stolen from an Arab bank messenger during a funds transfer. A shop blast caused a general alarm. a small boy warned the clerk with Arabic words printed on paper.
Ralph McCreary led more than 100 Scouters and William Penn Connell Council parents at Camp Twin Echo on Wednesday August 20.133 Scouts from 21 troops in six districts and eight adult leaders attended the camp with games water fun and a campfire address by McCreary praising the council’s best camp in its history aided by East Boroughs Council investment of 200000 and a 20 member staff.
Soviet sources protest Britain that three power talks to raise German industry breach the Potsdam Four Power Pact. Invoked are rights under Potsdam and the Big Four Council to approve any revision. American delegates Douglas and Clay attend the London discussions, with Murphy as Clay’s advisor.
Paris reports a cabinet accord on Indo China policy with Emile Bollaert to hold talks with Vietnamese leaders. The earlier plan to resume talks with Ho Chi Minh was rejected. A Bao Dai spokesman in Hong Kong said negotiations would begin with the Bao Dai united front, not Ho Chi Minh, whom the spokesman accuses of seeking a Soviet style regime in the French colony.
Harrisburg report shows Pennsylvania traffic fatalities for the first half of 1947 down 12.5 percent from the 1946 half year total, with 340 deaths by June 30 105 fewer than the prewar first half of 1941. Pedestrian deaths in June totaled 49, and overall June deaths rose 31 from 1946.
A steel shortage curtails national production, putting about 1,800 Baltimore General Motors workers off the job. Chevrolet and Fisher Body plants will be closed at least through Aug. 28, while roughly 900 keep working in the truck assembly division. In New York, Mina Edison, 82, widow of Thomas A. Foundation Hospital reported that Senator Theo G. Bilbo of Mississippi remained seriously ill and unchanged. The 69 year old senator has been a patient since August 21 and is described as seriously ill due to complications of diseases.
The Douglas Skystreak, flown by Caldwell, topped a 3 km course with a 640.7 mph mark and 653.8 mph peak. Calibrations took the day, and Caldwell logged around three hours in the craft across six flights, with about 3,000 total flight hours including World War II service.

Police hunted today for a man who posed as a police constable and abducted a youth and his 1 1/2 year old girl companion. The suspect forced the boy from the car, drove the girl to Riegelsville, then assaulted her. The car used was reported stolen in Philipsburg Monday night.
A spokesman for an international refugee group said 4400 Jewish refugees aboard three ships near southern France would be moved to the Bergen-Belsen displaced persons camp in the British zone if disembarked. The camp sits near the former Belsen site, the largest Jewish DP camp in the area.

The third disturbance of the tropical storm season was reported centered about 300 miles south of the Mississippi River mouth with winds 40 to 50 mph. The storm slowly moves toward the Texas Mexico border as squalls extend 200 to 250 miles north and east. Weather Bureau warns small craft off the Louisiana coast not to risk the open Gulf.
In Angelica New York Aug 21 police and divers searched for a man who disappeared after leaving a picnic to enter the water. Family said he was not missed for about 15 minutes before the body was found.
