Francis Gary Powers, the U S pilot, pleads guilty to espionage after a Moscow trial. He says he is deeply sorry. The court sentences him to 10 years with three years to be served in prison and notes premeditation and threat to world peace.
A Soviet court heard closing arguments in the Powers espionage trial amid claims of U S government provocation and nuclear policy danger. Prosecutor Rudenko urged a stern 15 year detention, linking the U2 flight to global security risks and revealing bitterness toward American actions and military leadership.
Oklahoma City pilot Jettie Cobb was named Thursday as the first of 12 women volunteers to pass Project Mercury tests. Dr Randolph Lovelace announced in Stockholm that women may join space travels in time, noting Cobb’s results and her credentials as a top airman with records and a gold medal.
Rudenko declared Powers violated Soviet air space and international law, arguing the United States conducts hostile overflights with bombers ready with atomic and hydrogen weapons. He warned such reconnaissance could portend an air attack, while recounting Soviet sovereignty over territory and air space. Harrisburg AP A Pennsylvania Turnpike official said the toll road kept pace with other turnpikes despite severe winter damage. Franklin Summers said repairs on the western Carlisle to Irwin stretch, built 20 years ago, will be completed before the season ends, with two lanes shut and traffic slowed to 35 mph to protect workers.

The Catholic churches of Hellwood and Cameron's Bottom plan their annual picnic this Sunday at the St Patrick Picnic Grounds.
