National Guard units were dispatched after a march of African American residents into a Ku Klux Klan area sparked tensions. The confrontation drew crowd attention, with authorities seeking to prevent violence and restore order.
The state mobilized 650 National Guardsmen and 175 state troopers to guard a march of Negroes through Livingston Parish while Klan areas were tense. Governor McKeithen said troops would stay to allow a six mile march, amid denials of withdrawal and unarmed marchers. Separate local council discussions over recreation funding and open space plans followed, with a commitment to continue programs for borough and township residents and an intent for future budget cooperation.
Stanley W. Lig, 35, of Indiana R.D. 1, escaped injury at 12 45 a m when his pickup skidded and struck a utility pole on Watts Hill Route 422 about two miles west of Indiana. State police report the truck skidded 450 feet before overturning and hitting the pole. Damage was listed at 3200 dollars. Police say Lig braked, slid 300 feet on the highway, 180 feet on the berm before overturning.
Within an hour the governor called up the National Guard to reinforce state troopers escorting Negro marchers eight days into the Bogalusa to Baton Rouge trek. Leaders dispute governor’s stance as clashes loom with Ku Klux Klan, with plans for rallies in Baton Rouge and at the Capitol. Protesters demand jobs for qualified Blacks at Charity Hospital, Welfare, health units, and state employment offices.
SAIGON AP US officials released a translated Viet Cong document dated March 1966 claiming leaders rejected negotiations for settlement and planned to wage fighting and propaganda to hasten the puppet South Vietnamese army collapse.
