Girl Killed In Accident In Lansford Pa

Catherine Strickler 20, daughter of Edwin Strickler the newly elected Eastern Pennsylvania vice commander of the American Legion, was killed in a Blue Mountain crash. Four other Lansford youths were injured, two seriously, as a sun blinded driver Ed Edwards 20 collided with a tractor trailer on Route 28 near Coaldale shortly after 6:50 a.m. The victims were admitted to Coaldale Hospital with varying injuries.

Three Leaders In Pittsburgh Arrested In Sedition Case

The FBI named Nelson as Organizer and No 1 Communist in Western Pennsylvania, on trial in Allegheny Court for sedition under a 1939 Pennsylvania law. He, Onda, and Nelson were among those arrested in Pittsburgh as the FBI also detained James Hulse Nelson and Benjamin Careuthers Sr., all held on $100,000 to $190,000 bonds amid rapid trial developments and new charges.

Youth Admits Starting Million-Dollar Tobacco Warehouse Blaze

A 19-year-old man told authorities he started the July 18 blaze at the J. E. Bahannon Co. Tobacco Storage Warehouse in Bowling Green. He said a cigarette lighter to see around sparked a stack of Burley leaf, with 2.5 to 3 million pounds destroyed and firemen battling the flames for over three days.

State College reports Michael J. Baher and John King of Indiana County cited for outstanding scholarship in the Spring semester. King earned 2.88 in senior agricultural education. Baher posted 2.60 in agricultural education.

Jets Battle In North Korea Involved Air Engagements

U S Eighth Army reports two major air battles over Northwest Korea. Twenty-eight Sabre jets clashed with twenty-four MiG-15s at high altitude. one Red fighter damaged and another probably destroyed. All American Sabres returned to base. Lt. Charles F. Lloyd of Marion Kentucky credited with probable kill. Earlier fight involved twenty-six Sabres colliding with fifty Red jets.

Bucktail Balloon Derby Raises Hundreds of Balloons

About 1,000 balloons will be released from Hyner Mountain for Lock Haven’s Bucktail Balloon Derby on Labor Day. Each balloon bears a card with owner contact. finders are urged to return it. Cash prizes will be awarded. Last year balloons drifted across Pennsylvania and into neighboring states, some traveling over 200 miles.

Gunman's Loot Fancy Clothes

A red haired gunman robbed a Baltimore haberdashery yesterday, taking about $30 from the cash register and nine pastel shirts. The suspect entered to view shirts and slacks, wore a pink shirt, yellow belt and gray pants, then locked owner Harry Farbman in a back room before fleeing.

Ex-Red Premier In Secret Meet

Alexander Kerensky former Russian premier now in the United States met with refugee groups in Munich to plan an anti-Kremlin campaign. He checked out of his hotel and arranged a secret rendezvous with Russian exiles to coordinate anti-Communist strategy. He led the anti-Communist League of fighters for freedom of the Russian people.

Havana mourned Sen. Eduardo Chibas with a hero’s funeral after his Aug. 5 suicide following a radio denunciation of President Pino Socarrs. Businesses closed, radio played dirges as thousands joined a three hour procession to the University of Havana and cemetery.

Brothers Die In Two Vehicle Crash Near Frazer

Paol Aug 18 44 two brothers were killed when a station wagon rear ended a halted truck in Frazer. Robert F McFadden Jr 9 of Oxford was killed instantly and his brother R Hayes McFadden 2 died en route to Chester County Hospital. Their mother Flora McFadden 30 was pulled from wreckage unconscious and treated for shock. Hospital described injuries not serious.

Aliquippa Steel Plant Blaze Destroys Five Tanks

Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp. cleaned debris after a fire at the West Aliquippa Byproducts plant destroyed five tanks. Firemen battled for three hours to stop spread to other plant areas and nearby homes. No injuries reported. damage expected to be heavy though production will not be affected.

Worker Drowns After Bridge Fall In Tampa

In Tampa on August 16 a 63 year old carpenter named W. W. Hudson drowned after timbers from a truck struck him as he stood on a bridge. Hudson, a railroad crew worker, was knocked into the Hillsborough River channel when the truck approached. The load swept him into the water after the front cleared him.

Black Lick Students to Attend Blairsville Schools

Black Lick Township has no local schools due to an agreement with Blairsville. Blairsville will enroll about 110 Black Lick pupils, including roughly 60 high school students and others from grades seven through twelve, under a pact signed last week between the two districts.

The Indiana County Knights of Columbus contributed 3500 dollars via the Supreme Office to the American Red Cross Nationwide Flood Disaster Relief Fund. Rains Break Texan Heat

Rains provide a brief cool spell across parts of Texas amid a scorching stretch of 100 degree weather. The Weather Bureau cites localized thunderstorms, with Beaumont dropping from 102 to 70, while Denison hit 112 and Marshall 109. Fatal heat victims include John J. New Wage Policy Adopted For Textile Workers

A wage policy boosts 90 000 CIO textile workers by six and a half percent amounting to eight and a half cents an hour, effective last March, aligning their raises with other New England mills under cost of living escalator provisions. The board approved a future escalator clause and delayed full seven and a half percent raises, while studying pension plans. Under the policy, workers may gain pay boosts via existing escalator contracts, future index-linked adjustments, or semiannual contract reviews to adjust for living-cost changes.

Crime Probe Now Closed

Washington reporters note the Senate Crime Investigating Committee closed its open hearings after weeks focused on the illegal drug trade and underworld figures. Chairman O’Conor said a final report due by Sept 1 will include 18 legislative recommendations. Subpoenas and arrest warrants remain in force until the committee ends. House Votes Big Cut In Foreign Aid

The House approved a sizable but limited reduction in foreign aid, cutting European economic allotment to 985 million dollars from 1.675 billion. Playgrounds Close as Blairsville Ends Summer Program

Blairsville closed its summer recreational program and municipal pool yesterday marking the final swimming day. Since opening June 18 the pool drew between 150 and 178 visitors daily. McGillick Park Boone's and the Morswood Avenue playgrounds also closed as of last Saturday.

San Marino ends its two year blockade of the 38 square mile republic after the government agrees to close its gambling offices. Tialy had imposed the blockade while San Marino remained independent and surrounded by its neighbor.
