Washington August 18 WPB Chairman J A Krug urged about 21000 volunteer salvage committees to remain active in the paper tin can and fats programs. He warned of immediate danger of collapse of the nation wide salvage program if volunteers quit before its work is finished. Materials remain short and will stay scarce for some time.
Washington August 18 The War Production Board unfroze large supplies of steel tin and aluminum for civilian production. The action followed the cancellation of nearly six allotments of these metals and the remaining ratings MM and AAA were kept only for emergencies.

Washington announces a limited release of quinine from the Government stockpile for civilian anti malaria needs and essential medicines. Authorizations cover physician prescriptions and quinine capsules tablets and other forms. Deliveries not allowed for use with other medical ingredients.

Washington August 18 America has produced aviation gasoline with an octane rating exceeding 130 the Petroleum Administration for War disclosed in connection with revocation of orders guiding the refining industry. Angelina Lucente, 26, of McKeesport, experienced three hours of relief from two weeks of persistent hiccoughs after four hypnotic sleep sessions at a local hospital. F. B. Farmer, physiotherapist, applied the treatment with Dr A. L. Fontana noting the patient slept from 2:30 p m to 5:30 p m and coughed only briefly. Hypnosis may be used again today for further relief.
