The Indiana County Fair enters its 96th edition with exhibits and entries moving onto grounds. A busy six days feature horse shows, auto thrill acts, stock car races, square dancing, and a nostalgia feel from the Lancaster Hoedowners Show. Detailed daily schedules appear on page II.
Westmoreland County Court was asked to overturn a Civil Service Commission ruling upholding the dismissal of Joseph Polito as Vandergrift police chief. In an appeal filed Friday Polito denied misconduct charges and was fired on April 9. Ances tonize Diana s Tavern Homer City Modern Aces.
Robert R. Blystone, 25, of Homer City RD 1, died yesterday in Indiana Hospital from injuries suffered in a July 10 automobile crash in Chattanooga Tennessee. His wife and two children Alice 4 and Robert 1 have recovered. Blystone had undergone brain surgery and was flown to Indiana on August 4. The body is at Askew Funeral Home in Homer City. The Air Force plans a camera equipped rocket launch toward the moon to answer major questions about the far side. Experts expect the unseen hemisphere to resemble the side we see, based on rare observations near the poles. The mission may reveal details about rays, crater origins, possible life, atmosphere, and the moon’s overall nature.
Governor plans a multi site tour on Wednesday August 20 starting in Harrisburg and ending at the Indiana County Fair Grounds. Program includes groundbreaking for a 1.3 million dollar Office and Maintenance building and a county district luncheon with officials from five counties. Leader will host Meet Your Governor program at the fair grounds with Master of Ceremonies E James Trimarchi Jr introducing the Governor.
Governor George M. Leader will descend from the speakers platform to wield a chrome plated shovel and break ground for a new 1.3 million State Highway building south of Indiana. The U-shaped facility on Route 80 will house district highway offices and maintenance crews. The shovel, gifted by Jefferson County, was chrome plated by a Punxsutawney firm and purchased by the district highway department staff. Keith R. Bloom will lead the school band in ceremony music.
Pittsburgh AP reports that the Eastern Investment and Development Corp, a keystone in Earl Belle's collapsed financial empire, was declared bankrupt by Judge Wallace Gourley on a People’s Union Bank of McKeesport petition and two other firms. Belle and Mitchell Ostwind fled to Rio de Janeiro in July amid investigations. FBI probes led to formal charges of $62,500 fraudulent conversion.
Four young girls died in a head-on collision five miles south of Breezewood Pennsylvania. A serviceman was critically injured and the wreck caused another fatal accident on Route 219 near Kane. Names include Shirley Swenson Nancy Henry Susanna Marquardt Joyce McCausland and Angela De Ponceau with Elizabeth La Barr among the injured.
Carl H Wissinger was sworn in as dog control officer for Indiana Borough yesterday. Burgess G W Marbach presided at the ceremony. Residents seeking stray or lost dog information should contact Mr Wissinger at Hopkins 40684. He succeeds Clarence Little of Indiana.
Western diplomats in the United Nations special session delay introducing a resolution to lay groundwork for Eisenhower's Middle East peace plan. Norway expected to present the proposal with Dag Hammarskjold in a key role as Asian and European nations consider joining. The United Arab Republic demands U.S. and British troops exit Lebanon and Jordan first.
In Armstrong County two top Old Freeport Bank officials face federal trial on charges of obtaining a $2000 kickback for approving a $15000 loan. Indictments named Charles J. Sober, 60, Vandergrift, bank president, and Dr. Richard W. Licinder, 46, Tarentum, vice president.

GALWAY Ireland AP strong evidence that the KILM airliner Hugo de Groot exploded in flight, killing 99 aboard before it plunged into the sea. Post mortems showed victims died before impact. Bodies recovered 100 miles off Galway Bay a day after the crash. Autopsies listed 25 women eight men one child. Bits of wreckage and personal belongings, including dolls and toys, were gathered as investigators search for the cause.
