Washington August 16 AP Major General Lewis B Hershey Selective Service Director said the draft will likely exceed the 185000 authorized this fiscal year. He noted world events render precise estimates impossible and Congress has removed armed forces size limits.
Wallace B. McGaughey 28 of Homer City R D is in serious condition at Indiana Hospital after a highway accident. Hospital staff say his left arm was amputated. State Police say details remain incomplete. A hit-and-run driver is suspected. McGaughey was returning from his route for Luther Cleaners when the crash occurred near Kent.
A six page booklet by the Historical and Genealogical Society of Indiana County covers local history and genealogical data from the county tour. It includes a drafted map with tour stops and topics such as Cherry Hill Manor the underground railroad trail and early Indian land purchases. Limited quantities are sold at Hall's Book Store on Philadelphia Street.

Ronald M Coulter supervising principal of Blairsville Public Schools was elected assistant county superintendent of schools by the Indiana County School Board. He begins September 1 and serves until July 5, 1954, bringing 26 years in public education and service in World Wars I and II.

Indiana Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1949 named delegates to the VEW district meet set for Blairsville on September 10. Selected were Zenas H. Hoover John Frampton Wilbert Campbell Howard Peterman Frank Cain Wall y Kitty and Paul Cummings. A wheelchair purchased for the community is now in use and post members planned the concession at the Indians County Fair August 20 to September 2. An army exhibit is planned for the Indiana County Fair from August 29 to September 2. The Army later announced the B-29 display would not be provided. Sgt. William Eldridge, a local recruiter, learned of the display plans this morning.

Two Indiana County men Joseph J. Shaffer and Paul Milliken Jr were arrested for burglary at Indiana Bakery on Philadelphia Street. They admitted breaking a rear window and taking about nine dollars as patrols spotted them together earlier. Shaffer, 31, coal miner, Milliken, 28, unemployed, were jailed after signing statements.

She will earn 3000 dollars yearly including transportation, from a field of four applicants. Stillwagon is a Indiana High School and Allegheny General School of Nurses graduate with special training at the University of Pittsburgh and has taught student nurses at Torrance State Hospital.
