Eighth Army Mopping Up In Italy
Eighth Army troops have mopped up German resistance in Empoli on the south bank of the Arno River 26 miles west of Florence. Allied headquarters announced today. Florence’s civilian relief continued as supplies moved in and bridges along the Arno were destroyed on orders to hinder the pursuit of German forces north of the city.

Ralph Piper son of Mr and Mrs Lewis Piper of Blakeville New Alexandria Head was killed in action in the Pacific theater on July 26 He had served over two years overseas 18 months and died one day after his 27th birthday A July 21 New Guinea letter to his parents preceded the news He leaves four sisters two brothers in service and both parents He was born July 26 1908 in Derry Township Westmoreland County and attended Derry Township High School class of 1935 He was a member of First Presbyterian Church Blairsville and Sunday School He departed for military service March 25 1942 from Homer City was stationed at Fort Bragg He never received a furlough and spent two birthdays in New Guinea
