Alverda Man Held on Serious Charges
Charles Velenski of Alverda was charged by County Detective Harry Koozer with felonious shooting aggravated assault and battery assaults and battery and pointing and discharging firearms. He was held for court after a hearing before C. McLain yesterday, then released on a writ of habeas corpus following the hearing. The case stems from a July 5 incident when Joe Lusnok was shot in the left forearm in the yard of Lusnok’s former home. Velenski returned armed with a .92 caliber revolver and fired twice. the first shot missed, the second struck Lusnok. Velenski was later located and detained.

Four torch murder suspects Congo to life terms in Michigan
Miss Catherine Keller, heiress niece of late Judge Darwin Z Black, was arrested in connection with the Ypsilanti torch murders. Fred Smith and two others confessed to killing four school aged youths, with Keller said to have washed Smiths clothing. The trio received four life terms each and were quickly arraigned and sentenced within hours, amid mob pressure.

Herbert E. McClain and Harry K. Kirkland, both of New Castle, were arrested by Chief Tony Askey in Clymer after a Ford sedan tied to robberies near the Victor No. 45 mine of Penn Run Coal Corp. Police found a .32 revolver, shells, carbide lamps, miners’ caps, and copper wire fragments. The pair reportedly confessed in part to cutting 1200 feet of copper wire last Sunday and 1644 feet on Tuesday, with 16 brass journal boxes found during the search.

Woman Dies From Rare Agranulocytosis in Chicago
In Chicago on August 14 a seventh notable woman died from agranulocytosis, the rare blood disease. Mrs Jillian Caldwell wife of Wallace Caldwell member of the Chicago school board died at Grand Rapids Michigan after weeks of transfusions and a high risk treatment using adenine sulphate. She was 84 years old and had suffered since July 1.
