St Louis Aug 14 Nominations for a president and vice president were avoided by the Populist national convention. Delegates may vote for any candidate and remain in good standing with the party. Roosevelt Progressives were favored though no firm choice was made. The Progressive plank adoption matched the Populist platform with eighteen, Democrats six, Taft Republicans six unappropriated.
In New York on August 14 Italian youths in a public park on East Twelfth Street between First and Second Avenues mobbed Miss Theois Carter after she distributed 1,000 toothbrushes to about 600 children. The crowd climbed on her auto and caused minor injuries before she fled. In Homestead Pennsylvania on August 14 John Culsen, 38, fired at a flagpole and signs in front of stores, delaying the display. he claimed he was ordered to shoot them down and was held for investigation.
In Kippenville Pennsylvania authorities pursue clues after Bert Dearolph his wife and daughter are found dead at the Dearolph home near Ling Corners. Mrs Dearolph appears to have choked while the top of her head was blown open with a rifle.
