Fidel Castro denounced Catholic Church criticisms as traitorous, accusing clergy backed by the United States of stirring demonstrations to topple his regime. He claimed Spain's Franco pressured priests in Cuba and spoke at a late night rally to celebrate his apparent health recovery, prompting fierce chants against the church.
Pittsburgh union and Jones and Laughlin negotiators adjourned talks early with no apparent agreement in the railroad strike that id led about 12,000 steelworkers at the J and L Pittsburgh works. A company spokesman said more talks are planned later today as 300 Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen members joined the walkout and about 700 other railroad employees struck.
SPRING CITY PA AP Governor David L Lawrence inspected Pennhurst State Hospital on Wednesday and described deplorable conditions. He cited the need for better facilities and higher staff salaries, planning to ask the Legislature in January for more state hospital funding. In Pasco Washington four residents Tru man H. Brown Celeste Dixon Israel M. Fowler and Robbie Jean Harris were shot to death in a home early today. The gunman fled in a car after the killings occurred in a bedroom. A young son woke, saw a white man flee, then alerted a telephone operator who called police.
Dag Hammarskjold rushed to the Congo to deploy a U N task force of Swedish troops into Katanga Province. He secured assurance from Moise Tshombe that the force of 300 soldiers and two generals would be received orderly when they arrive Friday. The mission aims to speed Belgian troop withdrawal and protect remaining civilians as Belgian forces pull back.
Premier Patrice Lumumba called for national unity amid anti government rioting in Kinshasa. Police and troops patrolled the capital as rioters were arrested and the area cordoned off, with no deaths reported and order restored. Information Minister Shamuhura blamed Abako for the unrest.

Vanderberg Air Force Base reports Americas newest satellite Discoverer XIIIX circling Earth every 94 minutes awaiting radio cue to eject a 300-pound capsule toward Ha s hati. The plan uses forward rockets parachutes and airborne nets to recover the instrumented capsule after reentry. Previous attempts failed to reach the capsule ejection point or achieve orbit.
The parents of U2 pilot Francis Gary Powers left New York for London and on to Moscow for his espionage trial starting Wednesday. Oliver Powers voiced guarded optimism, while Ida Powers hoped to see their son before the proceedings.
State authorities investigate the death of thousands of fish along a half mile of Dunnings Creek near Pleasantville Bedford County. Officials from the State Fish and Game Commission and the State Health Dept are examining the scene and cause.
In West Homestead a Nash fire killed Millard Nemcik 13 and Joyce 7. Parents Ethel Nemvek and William Nemeik and Ronald Jr. were uninjured. three other children escaped. Ethel was in fair condition with burns and shock. she said a lamp caused the blaze. The family lived on the building's second and third floors.
