Dayton fairgrounds heat did not deter officials as the three county fair moves into high gear with farm youth showcasing wares for judges. Tonight features auto thrill show and harness racing Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. grandstand, with Sandy winning top honors in sulky events and horsepulling contests highlighted this fourth day.
Thomas Gaines, 24, of Plum Borough, confessed to taking part in 106 burglaries across four counties including Allegheny Butler Armstrong and Westmoreland. At a hearing he said he wished to wipe his slate clean and gain freedom after his jail term. He faces five burglary charges in the Pittsburgh area as part of a 13 member ring. Eagles Party tonite.
Washington AP reports the September draft quota at 25 000, the largest since the Korean War end. The Defense Department notes the first full manpower impact of the buildup, with Army expansion to three combat divisions. Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force will not call during September.
Dayton fair featured a 1 p.m. event and a 4 p.m. Grand Cavalcade. The Sunshine Boys performed throughout the day and will appear tomorrow and Saturday. Children enjoyed rides and midway confessions on Children's Day with reduced carnival prices. Door prizes include three U.S. Treasury bonds and four ponies.
Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower passed his driver's test with flying colors at a Pennsylvania state police sub station in Gettysburg. Corporal Edward Gallagher administered both the oral and road tests, noting Eisenhower answered 10 questions on the Motor Vehicle Code and drove well.
Thirty four British schoolboys en route to a Norway holiday died when a chartered Vickers Viking crashed on a mountain during a coastal storm near Stavanger. Three crew and five adults also aboard perished. The Lanfranc School pupils, aged 13 to 16 from Croydon, were traveling with two teachers and a group of companions for a week of youth hostel stays, hiking and other activities. Local authorities and families pursued details as rescue and notification efforts began.
Washington AP reports the Labor Department shows 3,198,000 Americans held wage and salary jobs in July, a record. It notes slow gains ahead, with a year ago total at 53,184,000 and a February low of 51,314,000. Deputy Secretary Seymour Wolfbein says recovery is spotty and excludes self-employed and casual workers, yet payrolls have rebounded to near last year’s level. State local governments lead growth up 300,000, finance and service sectors up 115,000 combined.
About 16 000 retired anthracite coal miners are summoned to a mass meeting on August 20 by the Panther Valley Pensioned Miners Protest Committee to consider actions against mine operators and the United Mine Workers possibly including picket signs over pension cuts. Pensioners expected 100 dollars monthly at retirement, but have received 50 dollars and now 30 dollars as royalties payments fall short, with trustee Matt Brennan citing the welfare fund's near bankruptcy due to unpaid royalties.
In a planned hijacking attempt over Havana, a gun battle killed three people including the pilot and one hijacker. The copilot landed in a sugarcane field south of Havana as others escaped. Cuban officials blamed counterrevolutionaries and U S authorities faced accusations from Havana press. A separate blast hit the Fin de Siglo store in central Havana as a Pan American jet awaited departure from Mexico.
A Pan American DC8 landed in Miami after an 11 hour hijack ordeal in which a French artist forced the plane to Havana. All 82 aboard were unharmed. The hijacker, Albert Cadon, 27, was taken off the plane in Havana. Cuban officials said he has a history of mental disturbance. The jet carried Colombian Foreign Minister Julio Cesar Turbay Ayala among passengers.
The Senate voted 92 to 0 to make airplane hijacking a federal crime and to include the death penalty among stiff penalties for related sky crimes. The measure also adds severe penalties for other offenses in the air.
President Kennedy announced border patrols will monitor several airlines to deter hijackings and pilots doors will be locked with keys kept inside. He warned against premature protests about Cuban involvement and urged prudence while pursuing a nuclear test ban with Soviet Union. He noted hijacking trends as concerns grow and highlighted ongoing Inter-American talks in Uruguay.
