Some bygone joys and attic rooms remembered
A fragmentary reminiscence recalls Ash Hoppers boots and attic bedrooms, suet and ash, old tools, and rustic scenes. The voice wanders through a rural landscape of memory, noting a neglected institution and dated objects, from a crooked inverted pyramid fireplace setup to bootjacks and damp notions, hinting at a vanished era and its motifs.

Langley’s Folly Proved Public Unbelief Wrong
Samuel Pierpont Langley built what may have been the first successful aeroplane model and attempted flight in 1908. Public ridicule mocked his efforts after a brief rise and a splash into the Potomac. Later, Glenn Curtiss rebuilt Langley’s machine and achieved a successful flight at Hammondport, New York, vindicating Langley’s principles of aviation.

French Uhlans Retreat After Fierce Petit Croix Fight
French forces repelled an attack by German Uhlans near Petit Croix on the Lorraine frontier. The assault began with an advance guard from the German army moving from Matz toward Nancy. French defenders used machine guns to stop the charge, killing several attackers before the Germans withdrew in disorder. An aviator relayed the news to the French customs guard commander.
