Adolph A. Dupre 55 founder of Seven Springs Farm near Somerset died of a heart attack yesterday. Immigrant from Germany who arrived in 1924 after World War I service, he first worked as a New York city street cleaner then ran Rolling Rock Farm before purchasing Seven Springs in 1938. He built it into a summer winter sports resort covering about 6000 acres across Somerset Westmoreland and Fayeu counties with a ski slope cabins and club.
A smartly dressed man cashed more than $15,000 worth of stolen American Express travelers checks in the Albany area, FBI said. The checks were part of $20,000 stolen from Tradesmen's Bank & Trust Co in Philadelphia. He used a different name at each bank, cashing in Albany, Troy, and Schenectady before serial numbers were checked. Edward Louey, FBI Albany chief, declined details. A Philadelphia clerk reported 300 checks behind her counter, later found missing after a rush. the checks were later recognized at a New York City clearing house as stolen. An American Express spokesman said banks would not incur losses on the transactions.
Hiroshima marked its tenth anniversary with a world peace appeal as 50,000 gathered at Nakashima Peace Park. Mayor Watanabe urged never to repeat the tragedy while 3,000 Japanese and 2 foreigners met at a ward conference opposing atomic weapons. Official tallies put deaths around 18,150 locally with broader estimates up to 260,000.
Maj. Gen. Iskandar Mirza is named Pakistan governor general replacing the ailing Ghulam Muhammad after physicians ordered a two month rest. Mirza, 50, is a British trained officer seen as a strongman within the government as of May 1954 amid disloyalty charges against the constituent assembly.
