Far North settlement at Point Barrow welcomes the famous couple after a perilous 535 mile hop out of fog. The Lindberghs arrive to fanfare, sharing a moment with local Eskimos and White residents during their Arctic visit.
Colonel Lindbergh and Mrs Lindbergh landed their monoplane in a lagoon at Point Barrow early this morning to a welcoming crowd of about 250 Eskimos and 200 visitors. They completed a 585 mile flight from Aklavik through fog and headwinds in six and a half hours, enduring delays caused by bad weather before reaching the Arctic settlement. The couple planned to refuel at the Cutter Northland and continue along the coast toward Nome, with possible alternate routes noted.
Wilson Billy Marks of Kiski, the interscholastic golf champion, added the Bedford Springs amateur title to his honors by defeating Jack Reese of Johnstown in the 36 hole final 8 and 4. Reese had been medalist in this year’s national intercollegiate tournament. Marks led throughout and did not trail.
The Western Union Telegraph Company has a new teletype machine in operation on South Seventh Street. It prints incoming messages on gummed tape which is then pasted to a telegraph blank. the tape exits from the side in a continuous stream and the machine operates automatically. It is quiet and worth watching. Also includes a civic notice about a corn roast at the Old Mill near Camp Rest on Tuesday evening August 11 starting at 6 PM.
Ludwig Staab 24, a Swiss hitchhiker known for walking about 7,000 miles across 36 countries since 1927, arrives in Pittsburgh to head home to Bern. He says he has his autograph collection including five kings and notable figures, but after four years he feels homesick.
County Commissioners arrange handling of petitions today and tomorrow for candidates seeking nomination in county borough and township offices. Tuesday August 11 is last filing day. Multiple names listed for sheriff surveyor coroner commissioner school director judge of election and other local offices across Indiana Blairsville Glen Campbell Montgomery East Wheatfield and Pine townships and surrounding areas.

Washington on August 8 reports the Treasury net balance for August 6 at 210,014,041.21 with that day's expenditures of 21,672,772.49. Through August 6 customs receipts totaled 7,104,285.17 with the Neal reunion noted for August 20 at the Marien Center Parl.

Aug 8 Indiana woman Sarah Converse was held for the federal grand jury after a preliminary hearing before U S Commissioner Ray Patton Smith on a charge of violating the national prohibition act. In default of bond she remained jailed awaiting transfer to Allegheny county jail, Pittsburgh. Delmazio Zannini, arrested with her, was discharged for lack of evidence. The raid on a speakeasy at Indiana yielded gin whisky and alcohol.
The Writing Workers Bible Class at Ernest Union Church held its annual picnic at Mrs. Howard Tomer’s home. About 35 attendees enjoyed a pleasant gathering with good company and food.
A letter from Beverly Hills dated August 8 reports a wife and daughter arriving from Honolulu with a uku lele and a surfboard and mocking the idea of a six day vacation. The writer cites Jim Reed of Missouri claiming government bootlegging witness and criticizes treasury delays. The letter ends signed as Yours.
Airplanes drew crowds as the world's largest dirigible the Akron planned its christening in the Goodyear Zeppelin airdock. Mrs Hoover would release 48 homing pigeons instead of a champagne bottle. Officials prepared a brief ceremony before the maiden voyage within two weeks.
Laurie Hutchinson, with her mother Mrs. Sarah Hutchinson, was attacked by a dog while walking on Ninth street yesterday afternoon. A passing motorist yelled, the dog retreated, and the skin suffered only a slight bruise. The girl nearly fainted from shock but is expected to recover fully.
A preliminary meeting of delegates from the Tax Justice Leagues in the county is requested to fix time and place for a permanent organization. The meeting will be at the Court House in Indiana, Pennsylvania, on Saturday August 15, 1931 at 3 o'clock P M. H. Lydick, delegate from Tax Justice League of Center Township, Indiana County.
Criminal informations filed in Indiana county in five years and seven months. Squire Walter H. Jackson logged his 1000th information this week, while Squire C. C. McLain entered his 8889th after five years seven months. The record signals a marked rise in crime in Indiana county.
Souderton Pa Aug 7 William Kenneth Moyer noted marriage experimenter poet and writer in a contract union with Ethel Den Chicago college girl was found digging ditches for a living. He said one child is enough since livelihood requires ditch digging. The male child is one year old.
Carl Campbell of Avonmore Pennsylvania is jailed awaiting a hearing on charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He was arrested by Constable William F. Henderson after a crash near McCormick's bridge over Blacklick Creek on the Indiana Blairsville road yesterday afternoon. A physician declared him intoxicated.
Mr and Mrs Walter Fairman of Creekaide are receiving congratulations on the arrival of a son weighing seven pounds who will be known as Jackie Lee.
Eugene Weitzel of North Seventh Street was badly burned in his backyard yesterday afternoon about 3 30 when a pipe in a refrigerator ruptured and sulphur dioxide spilled on him. His eyes and sight were impaired but his condition is not serious and he is responding to treatment at home.
Five people were injured late yesterday when their car was struck by a hit-and-run motorist on the Lincoln Highway in Greensburg. Antonio Plando 44 and his wife 40 suffered fractured skulls. Mrs Menchio 48 internal injuries and a fractured leg. Lena Biinde 16 and Marie Menchio were cut and bruised.
Washington Aug 8 Congress likely to face winter appeals from coal, oil and lumber industries seeking remedies for overproduction. Proposals include government takeovers of excess mines for a coal reserve or licensing of mines via a new Interstate Commerce Commission branch. Officials fear constitutional issues and limited support for regulatory schemes.

Exotic German screen star Marlene Dietrich is named in a New York alienation suit filed by Mrs. Riga Von Sternberg, alleging Dietrich caused the director’s divorce from her. The file also includes a libel suit seeking $1,000,000 damages.
Dr James E Peterman of Cherry Tree filed petitions with County Commissioners and announced his candidacy for Coroner at the September Primary. He is son of the late Dr James H Peterman, a longtime Cherry Tree physician, and a University of Maryland graduate who returned to Cherry Tree after his father's death. He is active in the Indiana County Medical Association and plans an aggressive campaign.
Pittsburgh August 5. The 12th annual reunion of the 80th division The Blue Ridgers will culminate Sunday with a flag decked downtown parade to honor mothers who sent sons to battle for the United States. Spanish American War veterans escort the mothers as Civil War and other veterans join in the line of march along the Ohio River boat ride and an evening March Grade in Tenth Street.
