Decision Held Until Vote Ends On Civil Rights Debate

At Eisenhower news conference a reporter pressed for specifics on issues raised in the civil rights bill. The President avoided debate details but cited claims the House bill would wreck the judicial process. Administration leaders are split on delaying action or seeking a year-end compromise on the jury trial amendment. Some Republicans favor a stronger bill even if no measure passes, while others favor a compromise that would limit the criminal contempt trial to voting cases.
