95 000 Workers to Be Dismissed in Pennsylvania
Harrisburg Aug 7 The WPA in Pennsylvania received orders from Washington to dismiss 55 000 project workers by month end to comply with the law furloughing all those who have spent 18 continuous months on the rolls. The relief rolls reached 798,606 costing the Commonwealth $2,000,000 weekly, a four-year high. Col Philip Mathews, state WPA director, said many dismissed will be replaced from relief rolls or find private work. veterans are excluded. The state WPA roster stands at 137,402 with a September quota of 129,000 as the drive to curb unemployment continues.
