Three Dams Burst Near Las Vegas Suburbs Flood Hit Homes

Floodwaters from earth fill dams burst under heavy mountain rains inundated 12 plus homes south of Las Vegas New Mexico with water three to four feet deep and rivers 25 feet from normal channels Bridges washed out roads blocked and residents evacuated by National Guard trucks While crests passed Lourdes 18 miles away the area remained isolated with several bridges and routes out of the city damaged and unclear rainfall totals unavailable The worst appeared over but exact refuge counts could not be determined.

Ex Senator W F George Dies At 79

Ex Senator W F George dies at 79 after a career as a conservative on domestic issues and an internationalist on foreign policy. He chaired the Tax Writing Finance Committee during World War II and the Korean War and served on the Foreign Relations Committee. Born near Preston Georgia he studied at Mercer University where he won an oratorical medal four straight years. Mercer later named its law school after him in 1947.

Three Local Car Mishaps On Weekend

Police reported three weekend crashes. Leland R. Hutton, 16, hit Joanne T. Lytle, 23, as Hutton turned right at Fourth and Chestnut. both cars sustained $65 damages. In a second crash at Philadelphia and Sixth Streets, Mrs. Guy Balagillo sustained minor injuries when the Carney vehicle rear ended the Siverd car as it stopped for a pedestrian. Carney was cited for speeding for conditions.
