Special election in November names G. Stephen Edwards of North Mahoning as the Republican candidate following Walter Work’s death. Edwards, a lifelong farmer, has previously run for county commissioner and is active in local education, community and church groups.
Harrisburg AP A tour of strip mines across Clarion Auden Reid and Hazleton exposed committee members to both anthracite and bituminous regions. More than half of the Senate Local Government Committee favor softening or killing the proposed backfilling requirements. Chairman John J Haluska says support grew after the two day tour ending Thursday and six days of hearings.
London AP reports Parliament backs Prime Minister Harold Macmillan in a 313 5 vote to begin negotiations for entry into the European Common Market. Labor abstained while a censure amendment failed 318 209. Lords approved the motion as Britain ends isolation for potential prosperity with France Germany Italy Belgium the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

Fisher Scientific Company and the International Association of Machinists Union announce a new three-year labor agreement. The deal includes a thirteen-cent wage increase for maintenance and production workers, six-cent second-year and seven-cent third-year rate hikes, and an improved hospitalization plan with a Major Medical Expense Benefit. The pact was ratified at an American Legion Home meeting on August 2 after negotiations. Local IAM leader Raymond McCurdy and company officials praised the settlement and its contribution to growth and service.

Harrisburg AP reports seven polio cases in Pennsylvania so far this year. Dr William Seehrack Jr of the State Health Department notes it is the lowest tally at this point in 20 years. One of the seven, a 33 year old man, has died.
Wallace 0. Young announces Penn Furniture Store expansion in Indiana by absorbing most of the Indiana Hotel first floor. The $25,000 project adds 3,400 square feet, with plans by James BK and Robert T. Scheeren. The hotel will operate from the dining room during construction, new aluminum storefronts and windows to open view into the store, completion expected by mid October.
CAMP A. P. Hill Va AP Two soldiers were killed when lightning struck a field kitchen tent during a sudden storm. They were from the 83rd Infantry Division. Killed were Spt. 1.C. William F. Means 23 of Marysville and Pic. Charles F. Stroh 23 of Columbus Ohio. Others injured included Lt. Michael Michie Spec 4.C. Robert M. Eriedburg and Pfe. Marion Main.
In thick fog west of Gibraltar, the American freighter Janet Quinn and the Cuban-bound Soviet tanker Trud collided. Both vessels suffered damage but reached Gibraltar under their own steam with no casualties reported. The Trud was holed in the forward tank and the tank there was empty.
The Senate approved a peacetime defense measure totaling 46.848 billion dollars. The bill funds Kennedy’s request to expand and equip conventional forces and includes about one billion for jet bomber production and ongoing reserve and National Guard support.
The bill returns to the House as the pilot lacked fuel to reach Havana while hijackers pursued Cuba policy. Leonard Gilman, former Junction Serview agent and college boxer, was knocked down Bearden as FBI men subdued the situation amid West Berlin crisis and Kennedy appeals.

An airline hijacking by a car salesman, Leon Bearden, 38, and his son Cody, 16, held 10 hostages on a Boeing 707 for nearly nine hours in El Paso. They were bound over to a federal grand jury on bonds totaling 200000, prompting calls to treat such crimes as piracy and drawing White House and Congress attention.
