ANCHORAGE Alaska Aug 4 A dog named Boots deflected a brown bear attack on a couple returning to their Kenai River dairy farm care takers. Walker 58 suffered scalp loss a crushed elbow eye injuries and severe bites while his wife and Boots were unharmed The dog drew the second bear away enabling Mrs Walker to reach the cannery The dog and couple were treated with Walker flown to hospital the incident first reported of brown bears in the area.

Navy Opens Regular Navy to Women September 15 1948
Plans announced by the Bureau of Navy Personnel outline enlistment of 6000 women into the Regular Navy by June 1950 under the 1948 act.
