Railroad project upgrades Route 954 in Indiana county

The northwestern Indiana county line to Punxoutawney and north central Pennsylvania gains an outlet after improvements to Route 954 between Trade City and Smicksburg. Foresters Gather for Reforestation Talks Across County

Penn State extension forester FT Murphy will address four sessions on reforestation and fire prevention. Tomorrow at 10 at Clearfield Bituminous Coal Corp nursery near Clymer, tomorrow evening at 8 at Purchase Line Community Building, Wednesday at 10 at S. Fairbanks Escapes Burglary With Wife Nearby

A burglar and two companions escaped after Fairbanks and wife Mary Pickford returned at 8:30 AM from visiting Halia Jans. Fairbanks wrote a note about seeing Maurice Chevalier off at Grand Central airport, then confronted the intruders who were outside and inside the house. He said the robbers surprised him more.

Cavalry Troops Begin Mounted Training in Pennsylvania

Cavalry troops of the 193rd Regiment of Philadelphia under Colonel Colahan mounted their new horses for the first time this morning. They practiced courtesy scouting patroling combat principles and squad and platoon drill at Boalsburg and nearby towns including Unbury, Lock Haven, Lewinburg, New Castle and Bellefonte.

Drought fuels fires across Johnstown area and county

Forest and brush fires raged across the Johnstown region and surrounding townships as officials tallied nearly two dozen blazes. State forester T. L. Shirey reported about 60 acres burning in West Taylor and Millcreek areas, with wildfires in Blacklick, Nant-y-Glo, and Gallitzin townships compounding the crisis. A juvenile campfire sparked a 40 acre blaze near Nant-y-Glo, while several smaller fires stretched fire crews thin and prompted patrols along the American Tel and Tel Co lines.

Fire reports and heat grip across rural Pennsylvania

Forester Shirey reported multiple fires in Lower Yoder Township near the rail line, with two burns covering about one tenth of an acre and others in Homer’s Gap and near Altoona. Central efforts keep fires under control, but dry conditions and strong winds impede confirmation of extinction. Car crashes and injuries across Blairavilla area road

Police and highway patrol investigated a string of traffic incidents near Blairaville and Blairavilla on a Saturday night. A man believed intoxicated stopped for gas. a car fender damage led to an arrest at the Bauer home. Separately, Frank McCardle and Martin Almestri were treated after a collision on the BP Highway near Josephine. Almestri suffered back contusions and McCardle scalp and rib injuries. A Buick and a mysterious sedan crashed on the Ernest highway with minor injuries. Richard Shotwell was hospitalized after a shallow Crooked Creek dive caused head and neck injuries. Wing Beltroni lay in serious condition after a hit and run near Homer City with leg and facial injuries. J P Berish was jailed for drunken driving after a head-on crash with Tony Pisch’s Chevrolet. A Ford roadster and a Dodge near Sunny Side Inn caused minor injuries. Charles Shaw and Flossie Bertin were badly hurt in a William Penn Highway collision. Fresh’s car had minor injuries.
