Six Killed In Turnpike Three-Car Crash
Five members of an Ohio family and a Philadelphia man died in a three car collision on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Lebanon. Edward Johnson of Pittsburgh said the crash was like a big explosion as cars lifted and skidded. The Heltons from Springdale and Sweeney of Philadelphia were killed along with three of the Helton children. Johnson, his wife and a daughter were treated for minor injuries. The incident was the turnpike’s worst accident in 20 years.

Two Plead In Court Here Today
John Wilmer Fleming of Indiana R D 2 was sentenced by Judge Edwin M. Clark for failing to stop and identify after a July 14 automobile accident in Indiana Borough. Fleming received a suspended sentence with costs, damages payment, a $100 fine, and six months probation. Henry Alfred Pahel of Cleveland pleaded guilty to carrying a firearm without a permit and was ordered to appear for sentencing this afternoon for an incident on June 25 in Conemaugh Township.

Storm Strikes Crawford Area Causes Barns to Burn
A heavy rain storm in Crawford County caused two barns to burn as lightning struck the structures. Electrical service was interrupted for about an hour, forcing Meadville and Spencer Hospitals to rely on auxiliary power. A separate fire caused little damage. Sparks from a 2,400 volt line felled by a tree limb started the blaze, and the storm also brought down limbs, lines and TV antennas.

Three alarms respond to weekend fires in town
Indiana firemen were called to three alarms over the weekend. Most serious damage occurred Sunday from a short circuit in a jewelry store sign in the Cunningham Building near Troutman’s Philadelphia Street, with about 1000 dollars in damage. Second floor housed the law offices of William T. Pierce. The 3:40 p.m. alarm yesterday followed a Saturday 9:29 p.m. call to a residence at Third Street and Carter Avenue causing 500 dollars in damage and smoke-filled rooms. An alarm at Fisher Scientific Co. on South 09 Saturday at 6:45 p.m. traced to a storm-caused short circuit. overall, inspections traced the blaze origins to electrical short circuits and weather.
