Eight Nuclear Plants Closed Until Safety Changes Made
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission ordered eight nuclear plants shut down until safety improvements are made to prevent a repeat of the Three Mile Island accident. NRC may require more changes later and continues to study the plants. All eight, plus TMI Unit 2, were built by Babcock & Wilcox and deemed vulnerable to malfunctions. There are now 14 plants shut down, about one-fifth of the U S total. Five other plants have been closed since March 13 for earthquake inspections.

Sniper Kills Two at Fiesta Parade in San Antonio
