Washington April 2 The Navy borrowed 400 pounds of gold from Fort Knox to study cosmic rays at high altitude in Colorado. The gold was shaped into plates for cloud chamber experiments, produced showers for imaging, and was returned to the Treasury with only $2.25 lost in the process.
