President Carter’s windfall profits tax on oil profits would cost oil firms about 13 percent of the first three years’ extra income from decontrol, far less than a 50 percent levy. Administration figures show $15.4 billion shifts to producers by 1981, with only $2 billion more in taxes due to the windfall levy.
Mobil Corp the second largest oil company posts an 81 percent rise in first quarter profits to 437 million dollars from 241 million a year earlier. Higher sales and prices aided earnings with currency effects and inventory accounting also cited. Other oil majors reported gains as decontrol plans and taxes were debated in Washington.
Smithsonian Institution mounts a rare clock display from the 16th to 19th centuries in the Museum of History and Technology. The exhibit features 16 mantle and tall clocks, including a two-figure 16th century sword-striking clock and a Japanese Victorian shelf clock from before 1873.
